For Analogue Transit who, as the name suggests, represent the transition of sound from analog to digital, ATR marks the realization of a concept several years in its formation.  The album strongly showcases the individual talents of band members Kwaku Aning and Jeff Schreiner who, after five years of working together on various projects, stripped down their personnel and their approach and produced an album of cunning syncretism.  ATR is a marriage in which neither partner eclipses the other; both the art of the process and the beauty of the end product are equally present here.

Standout among the tracks included on the album are lead single “Breathe,” a ballad as moving in the album’s fully fleshed-out version as it is in the more intimately acoustic rendition of the band’s live performances, and “Great Jones,” where Jeff’s singularly unique approach to production and Kwaku’s powerful vocal performance are evident from the moment the beat drops.

The album progression remains strong from start to finish, with the opening intro giving audiences a clear understanding of the listening experience that awaits them.  Traditional handclaps are paired with an updated approach to the boom-bap programming on the heavily electronic “1983.” Lyrically, “Dream in Spaces” is a poignant look at self-imposed limitations, a theme the music explores with a stop-and-start syncopation layered under the soaring narration of an anonymous electronic voice.

ATR will be released in four separate installments containing three tracks per installment on June 15 and continuing 6/29, 7,13 and 7/27. These four installments will be available for digital purchase only.  The physical and digital release of the entire album will be on 8/10.

Who is this percussive phenom?

Behind the drum kit, hailing from Brandon, Vermont and weighing in with over 10 years of performance and recording experience, is the stick-wielding virtuoso Sam Merrick, who started playing drums at the tender age of 9. His auspicious beginnings included years playing in various district and All-state Jazz ensembles.  While attending Boston University, Sam became heavily involved in the Boston music scene, playing with a wide range of artist/bands such as The High Rise, Soulfege, The Genetics, and Love in Stockholm which cover musical stylings of Jazz to Reggae and Hip-hop to funk.   In the Fall of 2008, Sam moved to Brooklyn, NY to further persue his musical endeavours. He also performs with rockabilly outfit That Handsome Devil, and singer-songerwriters Jon Sandler and Argyle Johansen.
